Bernard Lake is in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in the headwaters of Elk Creek. Take the Landmark Stanley Road, Forest Road 579, to the Porter Creek trailhead, about 3 miles north of the turnoff to Forest Road 555. You need a good map to reach the lake which is about a mile bushwhack from the Porter Creek Trail about 6 miles from the trailhead.
