Description
A little-known and isolated river in southwestern Idaho, the Bruneau runs north from its headwaters near the Nevada border to join the Snake near Mountain Home. The river passes through impressive sandstone canyons, the red rocks creating a cool contrast with the pale greens of juniper trees, sagebrush, and desert grasses. The government allows very few launches on this uniquely beautiful desert river, providing an opportunity to enjoy the tranquility in isolation for those who book trips in advance. The tranquil stretches are frequently juxtaposed with exciting whitewater. The deep canyon often narrows to only a few boat-lengths across. Rough rocks create plenty of thrilling stretches, with the highlight undoubtedly the nonstop excitement of Five Mile Rapid, which drops 100 feet each mile.
The River is a few hours' drive from Boise or Twin Falls. There are no major communities near the launch or take-out points.
