Description

The forest has 70 campgrounds and picnic areas including some sites that are wheelchair accessible. Over 1,300 miles of trails are maintained. Visitors can hike and ride horseback on Selected trails are open to bicycles, motorcycles, ATVs. In the winter, some trails are groomed for skiers and snowmobilers. Big game hunting and trout fishing are popular. Over 7,600 miles of streams and more than 250 lakes and reservoirs offer excellent water sports activities including rafting, kayaking, sailing, and water-skiing. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River, a part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, is near the Boise Forest. For solitude, a portion of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness lies in the Boise National Forest, as well as other undeveloped areas. In addition, the Sawtooth Wilderness, and Sawtooth National Recreation Area are near the Boise Forest. In winter, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing are popular. Many of the snow trails are regularly groomed. Bogus Basin Ski Area, just north of Boise, is partially located on the Boise Forest. There are seven ski lifts, 45 groomed runs and 2,000 acres of night skiing, as well as 12 miles of groomed Nordic skiingtrails at Bogus.
