Description

The Jarbridge is a small, rocky, intense stretch of river beginning at the Idaho/Nevada border and flowing north for 25 miles to a conjunction with the Bruneau, where it continues on to the Snake near Mountain Home. Usually open for only a few brief weeks in early summer, the river drops an average of 50 feet per mile over its length, which combined with the rocky terrain makes for exciting and dangerous whitewater that will give expert paddlers a thrill.

The scenery on this remote desert river is unique. Passing through steep narrow canyons once populated by Native Americans, the terrain is similar to that found in the epic national parks of southern Utah. Many outfitters break up a trip on the Jarbridge with hikes to natural bridges, hot springs, and pre-Columbian rock art. Eagles, lizards, and antelope are among the diverse animals who inhabit this well-preserved area, and in late spring when the river is run there are often desert wildflowers in bloom.

The Jarbridge joins the tamer Bruneau River after 25 miles, with options to extend your trip on this similar river. There are no major communities near the Jarbridge, but Twin Falls and Boise are both within a drive of a few hours.
