High in the northern tip of Idaho's panhandle is Lake Pend Oreille, the state's largest lake. Lake Pend Orielle's 111 miles of uncrowded shoreline invite boaters, parasailers, and photographers from around the country. Anglers can try their hand at catching mackinaw trout, giant kamloops, or any of a dozen other species of fish which swim through the lake's deep waters. Nearby Schweitzer Mountain is a top ski resort with killer views. Area visitors can also explore the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, home to tens of thousands of geese and ducks, as well as larger mammals such as moose, bald eagles, and bear. Sleigh rides, backpacking, and cross-country ski treks are other options for the outdoor enthusiast.

The town of Sandpoint, which has been a logging hub for generations, has begun to reshape itself in the past few decades. People from around the world have come to live here for the solitude, the scenery, or the skiing, resulting in a surprisingly diverse community. An eclectic mix of dining options is available, as well as art galleries and performers. Surrounded by water and bridges, Sandpoint's scenery have made it the home of a wide variety of festivals and special events throughout the year.
