Description

From the trailhead, the trail climbs 1000 feet to the junction with Downie Lake trail No. 1609 then descends 600 feet and winds between two small ponds before reaching the shallow lake.  There are no campsites around the lake, although by hiking a short distance up the hill from the east lakeshore, a grassy slope with ample camping spaces and a view of  Mt. Ireland is possible.

Basic Directions

Take Highway 7 from Baker City to the Sumpter turnoff.  Continue west on Forest Road 73 past Sumpter.  Turn north on Forest Road 7370.  Keeping left, drive approximately 4 miles.  At this point, the 7370 road turns into Forest Road 100.  Continue  forward for about one-quarter mile.  The trailhead is on the left, which is the old 130 road.  The trail follows old road 130 then turns off on the left.  Follow signs.  After 2.3 miles it junctions with Downie Lake trail #1609.  Continue left up the ridge for one mile to the lookout or turn right down the ridge on trail #1609 for one mile to Downie Lake.
