Description

The Hangerman Tunnel Trail is a non-technical trail in high elevation terrain, with excellent views along its length of alpine scenery, lakes and the ghost town of Douglas.

The trail is a mix of abandoned railroad bed, dirt roadway and singletrack, with a high point of over 11,500 feet. There are interpretive signs along the way that explain about the railroad project. Riders looking for additional mileage can like up with the Turquoise Lake Trail near the end of the ride for an additional grind.

While riding any trail system it is a great idea to include a repair kit and first aid kit. Hagerman Pass Trail is multi-use and hikers, horseback riders, vehicles and other trail users may be seen along the way. Please be considerate on the trails and understand right of way protocol. Hagerman Pass Trail is located in high elevation mountains and can experience sudden weather shifts, so riders should bring appropriate warm layers in anticipation of this.

Basic Directions

From Leadville take Highway 24 and turn onto the Turquoise Lake Road across from Colorado Mountain Collage. Follow the Turquoise lake Road all the way to the lake and cross sugarload dam. Hagerman Pass Road is on the left. Follow Hagerman Pass Road to the first pullout and ride up the road. A map comes in handy from this point.
